Kobena Mercer is a cultural worker/critic whose
varied work on the politics of representation in African diasporic
visual arts has inaugurated an important line of inquiry into
post-identitarian
cultural politics. His first book, Welcome to the Jungle: New
Positions in Black Cultural Studies is soon to be followed
by a text tentatively titled The Black Body in Visual Culture.
Mercer maintains a presence inside and outside the academy. He
has taught at UC Santa Cruz in the History of Consciousness Program
and in the fall of 1996 he is a visiting professor in the Africana
Studies department at N.Y.U. He contributes frequently to Screen,
ArtForum, and Sight &
Sound.
Below is a link to a Mercer bibliography, and we hope to reproduce
some of his written work here in the future.
